Jeep or trek: two ways to see the Mount Batur sunrise

Watching the sun rise over Mount Batur is one of the best-known mornings in Bali. You can get there on foot or by jeep. Here is how the two compare, so you can pick the one that suits you.

Trekking up

A sunrise trek means walking up the volcano in the dark so you reach the top before the sun. It suits travellers who want a hike and are happy with an early, physical start.

Riding up by jeep

On the Batur Jeep Sunrise you skip the climb. We pick you up from your hotel between 02.30 and 03.00 am, and the jeep leaves the basecamp at 04.00 am for the sunrise point, where you arrive around 04.45 am. Breakfast is served while you wait for the sun.

More than the sunrise

After the sunrise, the jeep tour continues to the black lava and black sand before heading back to the basecamp around 08.00 am. From there, your driver takes you back to your hotel.

Who the jeep tour suits

  • Travellers who want the sunrise without a climb in the dark
  • Couples and friends who want photos on the jeep and on the lava field
  • Anyone who likes having breakfast, water and a flashlight taken care of

Good to know

Both ways start very early, so bring a jacket or warm clothes. On the jeep tour, insurance covers your entire trip.
